  • Employee Spotlight: Diana Ramirez

    Employee Spotlight: Diana Ramirez

In her trademark soft-spoken tone, Diana describes growing up in Queens, New York. “I liked the suburbs much more than the city”, she confides with an enchanting smile, “where we could run around our yards, playing man-hunt and making mud pies.”

“I think my younger siblings ganged up on me, but no matter, because I always took on the older sister/mother role.”

In talking to Diana, you can feel that nurturing warmth. It comes through in her language, in her mannerisms, and in her voice. Diana Ramirez joined our firm in 2013, and over the last five years, has developed a reputation among her colleagues and clients for her superb quality of work, and compassionate, glowing personality.

Being raised by her Colombian parents in Queens was easy. It wasn’t until she was 13 years old, when the family moved her and her two siblings to Deerfield Beach that she experienced a true culture shock. She felt a bit out of place at her Boca Raton high school.

It wasn’t long before she was able to make friends, and in her sophomore year she met the love of her life, Jimmy.

After high school, Jimmy decided college wasn’t for him, taking a job at Publix instead. That turned out to be a cunning move. Twenty years later, Jimmy now manages the new Belmart Plaza store, located about five minutes from our office.

After college, Diana took a paralegal internship at another local personal injury firm, and soon after, the high school sweethearts gave birth to a baby girl, Jasmine. But it wasn’t all perfect. Jasmine was born prematurely, spending 30 days in the neonatal intensive care unit.

During this difficult time, Diana and Jimmy preoccupied themselves with their careers. Baby Jasmine became stronger every day and was soon able to come home. Now 14 years old, Jasmine is thinking about college herself, and Diana wants to make sure her only daughter takes advantage of every opportunity that is available to her. That is what Diana’s family did for her.

She understands that now. Opportunity is why her parents moved the family to Florida all those years ago. It’s why Jimmy took that Publix job, so Diana could be the first in her family to graduate from college.

Diana credits her success to these many sacrifices, and it fills her heart with gratitude. “When you can recognize and appreciate the love that others shower on you, it makes it easier to turn around and do the same for others”, she says.

And that is exactly why Diana’s clients love her so much. Thank you for five great years with the firm, Diana!

  • LOCG Wins Overall #1 Top Workplace for 2018

LOCG Wins Overall #1 Top Workplace for 2018

Top Workplaces 2018 LogoThe Law Offices of Craig Goldenfarb, P.A. is delighted to announce that they have been ranked as the Overall #1 Top Workplace in the small employer category by the Sun-Sentinel for 2018.

This special distinction is awarded to the top 40 companies who qualify as a Top Workplace based on employee sentiment, collected via surveys and analyzed by a human resources firm. This year, more than 11,000 surveys were conducted by workers across South Florida.

While in the running for the top spot, the Sun-Sentinel dispatched photographers and a business reporter to visit the office of the West Palm Beach-based personal injury law firm, to interview Mr. Goldenfarb and his employees.

The story, published by the Sun-Sentinel, describes a “culture of caring” by the firm, with an emphasis on employee wellness: emotional wellness, physical wellness, and financial wellness.

Leading the charge is Director of Administration Michelle Winfree. In 2017, she installed The Quiet Room within the company’s 20k square foot office as a dedicated space where employees are encouraged to take mid-day breaks to read, meditate, or just relax. There is a lock and privacy screen for new mothers who are nursing, and a cold fridge to store their bottles.

The firm also helps pay for world-class “life coaching” programs for employees who are interested in mindfulness training. Throughout the year, employees also participate in about a dozen social outings, which include walks, volunteer activities, and team-building events and happy hours.

The law firm’s 50+ employees are also encouraged to stay physical throughout the day with the Wellness Room. This room features several treadmills and stationary bikes, as well as yoga mats and soft music. The firm arranges for flu shots, health “check-ups”, and even mini-massage “wellness days”, all of which are held in the room at different times of the year.

But LOCG didn’t stop there – the most recent effort to round out the “employee wellness” initiative is an emphasis on financial wellness. In addition to paying above-market salaries, the firm is extremely generous with their benefits.

These additional benefits include bonus incentives, a 401k match and profit-sharing, life insurance, and health/dental/vision plans.

New for 2018, the firm will be bringing in a wills and trusts lawyer, and a financial advisor, to provide legal and consulting work for basic life planning at no cost to the employees.

At the Top Workplaces 2018 Luncheon, in which LOCG was announced as the top winner for the small employer category, our firm’s founder Mr. Craig M. Goldenfarb, Esq. took the podium to accept the award, along with Ms. Winfree and the firm’s Marketing Director, Tom Copeland

“It is extremely important to me that our employees want to come to work”, he said, in front of about 400 business leaders. “When you have empowered employees, they will serve the company, they will serve each other, and most importantly, they will serve their clients.”

The firm hopes to use this award as a powerful recruiting tool.

“In order to attract the best workforce, you have to offer the best version of your company” says Winfree, who is credited with the staffing success at the law firm. “That means building a culture that puts your employees first. We have done that not only by being generous, but also by showing respect and fairness to every single employee, from the owner of the law firm at the top, down to the legal interns and receptionists.”

Everyone in the firm gets an opportunity to shine. In fact, there are several examples of employees who have been promoted from within multiple times. There are also examples of the firm accommodating employees who were unhappy in their current role, or who needed to scale back their role for personal reasons.

Tom Copeland celebrated five years of service with the firm the same month they won the Top Workplaces award. “I think the real testament to why this firm deserved to win the overall Top Workplace award is evident in the ranks of our employees”, he says. “We are celebrating one, five, and ten-year service anniversaries all the time. The firm’s very first employee who started with Craig more than fifteen years ago is still here. That is frankly uncommon in South Florida.”

The personal injury firm continues to prosper and grow, adding new employees at a healthy pace, but not because of turnover; rather, it’s their “culture of caring” that is good for business, and business is good.

  • Caleb Ray, 8 Year-Old Boy, Dies Due to SCA on Soccer Field

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]A West Virginia family is grieving the loss of their previous 8 year-old boy, Caleb Ray, after he suddenly collapsed on a soccer field in Lincoln County. The father was there by his side within seconds, and CPR was administered while the ambulance rushed to the scene. Unfortunately, Caleb could not be saved. The family has been quoted as believing that the cause of death was Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA).

The boy’s surviving parents describe the scene of the incident as being on a soccer field. Young Caleb was just starting the first practice session of his soccer season. Though the details have not been released, it appears that he had joined a little league team, and may have been on the premises owned either by the city, or a youth athletic organization.

It also appears there was no Automated External Defibrillator (or “AED”) present. These life-saving devices counter-act sudden cardiac arrest by delivering a shock to the heart that normalizes heart rhythms.

Why there may be a potential liability case

There maybe a potential liability case against the owner(s) of the field that the incident occurred on for not having an AED present. West Virginia state laws dictate how and when AEDs should be present and used. A theory of liability may lie in the statute.

West Virgina does have a Good Samaritan law, but that may only apply in situations in which an AED is used. Further, it is unclear on first reading of WV laws what facilities or organizations may by required to have an AED on site. If an AED was required, and one was not present when Caleb experienced SCA, the owners and/or managers of the property on which the incident occurred may be held liability.

The family is doing the right thing

The surviving parents are doing the right thing by advocating for the widespread adoption of AEDs. With an AED present, the chances for survival for a victim of SCA tops 90% when used within three minutes of the onset of the sudden attack.

The family has received donations to help buy AEDs to be present at youth sports games.

It is imperative that the family seek legal advice from an experienced law firm in this area of law. These consultations are completely confidential and free.

As the founder of the Law Offices of Craig Goldenfarb, P.A., Mr. Goldenfarb manages the daily operations of all of the many departments of the law firm.

    Craig Goldenfarb, Esq.

Craig M. Goldenfarb, Esq. has been practicing personal injury law, and specifically, AED litigation, for almost 20 years.

Mr. Goldenfarb is the former Chairperson of the AED Litigation Committee of the American Association of Justice (AAJ), a nationally recognized civil trial lawyers group.

Mr. Goldenfarb has represented dozens of families of victims of Sudden Cardiac Arrest in wrongful death litigation for incidents in which fatal SCA occurs and there is no AED available, or the AED malfunctions.

He is also the founder of Heart of the Game, a national 501(c)(3) non-profit dedicated to providing free AEDs and emergency medical training to recreational youth sports programs.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

  • Spencer Kuvin Discuses the Criminal Assault Conviction of Bill Cosby, And What Will Happen Next for Chloe Goins

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_video link=”https://youtu.be/rCI6bNr6FwU” title=”Spencer Kuvin Explains the Conviction of Bill Cosby”][vc_column_text]On Thursday, April 27th, 2018, a jury in Philadelphia found Bill Cosby guilty on all accounts in the criminal trial that stemmed from an assault he perpetrated against Andrea Constand 14 years ago.

The former actor was convicted on three counts of aggravated indecent assault brought by prosecutors, and could now face up to 30 years in prison.

It was clearly not the result Cosby and his lawyers were expecting, but one that the world needed to see. This was the first celebrity trial since the #meToo movement took off in late 2016, and the second trial Cosby had to fight through since the judge declared a hung jury the first time around.

Our very own Personal Injury Trial Attorney Spencer T. Kuvin, Esq. is the lead attorney on the only sexual assault civil case against Cosby in the country, which has been under a stay by a California state judge pending the outcome of the Philadelphia criminal case.

With yesterday’s guilty verdict, Mr. Kuvin said it’s time to petition his judge to lift the stay, and move on to dispose Cosby and his business associates as soon as possible.

Mr. Kuvin and our law firm represents Chloe Goins, a former model who was assaulted by Cosby at the Playboy Mansion in Los Angeles sometime around 2010.

In this quick video, we sat down with Spencer to discuss the impact the verdict will have on his client’s case, what he plans to do next with the case, and ultimately, what he is looking to achieve in his case against Cosby.

Want more? Let us know in the comments! We plan to release a few more web videos on the Cosby trial as it happens, but we need to know if you’re watching. So ask us a question, or just drop us a line to let us know you want to see more.

  • First Employee Debbie Steigerwald Celebrates 15 Years with LOCG

First Employee Debbie Steigerwald Celebrates 15 Years with LOCG

As it is for most New Jersey natives, the draw of year-round sunshine in the South is enchanting. As soon as she could, Debbie Steigerwald left her hometown of Howell Township. She landed in Pensacola, Florida, but even that wasn’t far enough south.

Within two years, she and her husband Chris were married and living in the U.S. Virgin Islands – initially landing on St. Croix, but eventually they discovered and fell in love with St. John, where they would spend the first decade of their married life. That was the beginning of many lifelong commitments she would honor.

This past September, Debbie enjoyed an important milestone as we celebrated her fifteen year anniversary with our law firm. She is our longest tenured employee. In fact, she has been with the firm as long as Mr. Goldenfarb has!

Prior to 2002, Debbie had been Mr. Goldenfarb’s legal assistant for several years while he was employed by another personal injury law firm. That year, he decided to start his own law firm. “He took me to lunch on a Thursday. Craig said he would be giving his resignation the next day and starting his own firm, and asked me to come with him”, Debbie explains. “I knew that Craig was smart, ambitious, and very hard-working. I figured it was time for a change; and I was confident that Craig would be successful.”

When asked about Debbie leaving a stable job for an unknown future to join him, Craig admits, “Debbie must have seen something in me that I wasn’t sure was there at the time.” And how does that feel today? “I feel amazed and proud that someone has chosen to take this journey alongside me, and I’m so thankful to Debbie for her faith in me.”

Our firm has undergone truly stunning transformations over these fifteen years, from Debbie and Craig in a very small office space, to more than fifty employees spread among seven different departments. But, as they say, some things never change; such as the fact that Mr. Goldenfarb continues to be a hard-worker, and Debbie continues to honor her most important commitments.

One of Debbie’s favorite pastimes is horticulture and trying to grow their own food with her husband on their one-and-a-half-acre homestead in the Acreage. Since building their house twenty-five years ago, there are now more than twenty different kinds of fruit trees growing on their property.

On her work ethic, which shows no signs of abating, Debbie explains that while she is on the clock, she works as hard as she can for her employer. That was true on her first day, and it’s true on her 5,476th day. It’s an important tenant of her Christian work ethic to give her employer her best efforts.

Next February, she and Chris will be celebrating 39 years of marriage. Commitment is a theme that runs deep in Debbie’s life. Ironically, celebrating fifteen years with our firm is the shortest one she’s accomplished.

Thank you, Debbie, for your continued commitment to excellence and service to our law firm and our clients, and congratulations on your fifteen anniversary!

  • Deborah Jones

“I fell in the mall about five years ago. I felt that I had an awesome team of attorneys. They were great throughout the whole time, patient, kind, and nice. I sing their praise from now on. The staff are always pleasant, they’re great people. They really know their jobs. They have it together, and I will highly recommended their office for any case.”

  • Reports of Rising Deaths on Railroads in Florida Increase Need for Lawyers

Reports of Rising Deaths on Railroads in Florida Increase Need for Lawyers

    [template id=”10409″]

The Sun-Sentinel reported this morning on that the death toll on railroad tracks in South Florida has nearly doubled in 2017 from 2016.

The report cited data that showed through September of 2017, twenty-three people lost their lives due to suicide or accidental death in collisions with trains operated by Tri-Rail, CSX (shipping), and Florida East Coast Railway, on which Amtrak passenger trains operate.

Compared to only 14 deaths in all of 2016, twenty-three in only nine months is a staggering increase.

Why is this important to our law firm? The reason is that some of these incidents may be legitimate personal injury death claims. The surviving family members could hold the owners and operators of these dangerous machinery accountable if there was negligence involved on the part of the owners.

Our law firm has handled several of these cases this year

Of the twenty-three death cases recorded in South Florida in 2017, our law firm has represented the families in several of those cases. Because of confidentiality for both the family and the defendants, we will not go into any specific details on any of those cases.

However, there is some information insight we can provide.

Firstly, the operators of the rail line are responsible for ensuring that the rail line is operated in a safe manner. That may mean that the trains and commuter lines be operated within established speed and guidelines. That also may mean keeping their premises blocked or cordoned off from pedestrian, vehicle, or bicyclist traffic at dangerous or populous intersections.

If any safety measures were breached during the operation of any rail line, whether it be logistical train lines operated by CSX, or commuter lines operated by Tri-Rail or Brightline, and the result is that someone was killed, that may be a personal injury case.

    Brightline Train waits for passengers
A Brightline train waits to board passengers. The problem with railroad deaths is only expected to rise as Brightline comes into full service from Miami to West Palm Beach.

Another interested point to note is that these rail cars, especially the newer, faster, and more technologically advances rail cars like Brightline, are deceivingly quiet. Though the report released today cites some portion of the deaths being linked to suicide, it’s entirely possible for someone to stumbled upon the rail line, and be killed un-expectantly.

These are extremely difficult cases to prosecute in civil court, which is what our law firm does on behalf of the families who lose loves ones due to accidental and fatal encounters with trains throughout South Florida.

But we do our very best to pursue justice on behalf of our clients. If we can prove negligence was a factor, we will relentlessly pursue these operators.

As with all potential personal injury matters, families of loves ones who have lost someone should call our law firm to find out if we can help. Consultations are completely free, and there is no cost or fees for our firm to begin working on the case. We are only paid if we secure a settlement or verdict on behalf of our client.
